Max's Ring of Fire supports the Neuroblastoma and Medulloblastoma Translational Research Consortium or NMTRC.

We need your DONATIONS to help us give researchers and doctors the tools they need. 100% of every donated dollar is guaranteed to fund meaningful neuroblastoma research and clinical trials NOW!

An ongoing inspiration for many people, Max was born on June 30, 2001. He was diagnosed with stage IV, high-risk neuroblastoma in October 2004. He whizzed through frontline treatment and by the following summer was effectively on the road back to a "normal" life - albeit with almost total hearing loss, a new immune system, and about 10lbs to gain back, all courtesy of Mr. Chemo.

Unfortunately, Max relapsed (as most high-risk NB patients do) in November 2006. Max fought bravely, entering a clinical trial in Vermont where he received nifurtimox in combination with other chemo agents. This combination diminished the disease until there was just one tiny spot still evident on his spine. But in February 2008 the beast came roaring back and we could never control it again, despite everything we tried. Max passed away on August 31, 2008 at 8:45pm in his mommy and daddy's bed.

San Diego 5K & Fun Run to Benefit Childhood Cancer Research

Max's Ring of Fire (www.maxsringoffire.org) , a San Diego-based non-profit fundraising and advocacy organization, has announced their first-ever 5K road race and 1 Mile Fun Run to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. The event, called Max Run, will be held at Lake Miramar in Scripps Ranch on Saturday, September 11.

The race will honor Max Mikulak, a San Diego child who passed away in 2008, two months after his seventh birthday, after following a four-year battle with neuroblastoma. His parents started Max’s Ring of Fire (MROF) to raise money for researching innovative, low toxicity treatments for pediatric cancer.

“We are excited to host the first-annual Max Run fundraiser along the scenic Lake Miramar," said Melissa Mikulak, Max’s mother. “There is little money to be made by large pharmaceutical companies testing for drug efficiency in children’s cancers. In the past 20 years, there have only been two drugs made specifically for a childhood cancer. This has left those of us directly affected by a child with cancer to our own means for funding the much-needed research.”

The race will start at 7:30 a.m. for the kid-and stroller-friendly 1 Mile Fun Run. The 5k begins at 8:00 a.m. Participants must register in advance - until September 3rd registrations can be done online (www.MaxRun.org) . Registrations will be accepted until the night before the Max Run, at Road Runner Sports in Kearney Mesa. Race-day registrations will not be available. Road Runner Sports will also be hosting packet pick-up starting one week prior to the race.

In addition to the run and walk, entertainment will be provided by Ronald McDonald and several characters from the San Diego Star Wars Society. Legoland has donated park hopper passes for the top youth winners. Road Runner Sports experts will be on hand to fit runners with appropriate footwear through their Shoe Dog system.  Also taking part in the race will be Carlsbad’s local running celebrity, Mike Sheehy, who holds the Guinness World Record for running more than 400 miles in one week.

“It is truly my honor to be a part of this amazing event,” says Sheehy.

“One hundred percent of the money we raise through registrations and donations at this event will go directly to funding childhood cancer research,” said Mikulak. “We’ve been fortunate to pick up sponsorships from Road Runner Sports, Floaties Swim School, Aspire IRB, Sole Warrior Sports, Teneleven Interactive and the incredible nurses and doctors at Rady’s Children Hospital, who helped to offset the costs associated with producing Max Run.”

To participate, register online at http://www.maxrun.org or http://www.active.com by September 9, or in person on September 10 at Road Runners Sports in Kearney Mesa from 4:00-8:00pm( no race day registrations) . Registration is $20 for the Fun Run, $30 for the 5k. For more information about Max Run and MROF, visit http://www.maxrun.org
